The News in Brief

February 2, 2011

The AJC and GPB reported in brief yesterday on fresh legislative moves on the interbasin transfer (IBT) issue. After the DNR Board enacted inadequate rules on IBTs last week, some legislators are making clear that they want to see the right approach taken.  The question here may be as much about IBT regulations themselves as it is about public decision-making on a topic like this – and whether it’s right for an appointed body to have the full say on a topic with such widespread interest among the public and elected officials in the state.

There is now a bill that’s been dropped in the House that would require scrutiny of IBT proposals, something the new DNR rule doesn’t do. The bill’s sponsors include Rep. Alan Powell, Rep. Tom McCall and several others.

Stay tuned…
